On a UNIX system, the shell is software that accepts and acts on commands from the terminal. UNIX has a number of slightly different shells, e.g., C shell, the simpler Bourne shell named after Steven Bourne of Bell Labs, and the more popular Korn Shell named after David Korn of Bell Labs.
The Internet can be accessed with text-based shell accounts. The manual of UNIX shell commands can be accessed by typing "man" at a UNIX prompt.
